What is WEEE and who does it affect?
WEEE stands for Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment. The legislation came
into force in July 2007. At the present time
only businesses and organisations are
affected by this legislation which places
a duty of care on the owners of IT
equipment to ensure that all waste
equipment is disposed of in an
environmentally friendly manner. Although
home users are not affected by this
legislation, in order to prevent harmful
chemicals entering the environment
through landfill, it is advisable to dispose
of IT waste equipment responsibly.
How can I dispose of my unwanted
computer equipment?
will remove ALL computer related
waste, regardless of age, quantity and
condition, at your convenience. Please
note: For schools, colleges, charities and
domestic users in Kent a FREE removal
service is offered. For these groups
outside of Kent we make a small charge
to cover transportation costs. Our
service to businesses is offered at a very
competitive price.
What happens to my computer?
For businesses and organisations such
as schools all equipment is catalogued,
an asset list and a waste transfer note
are issued. Our automatic procedure
for all businesses, organisations and
home users is to erase all data to MoD
standard so that information from hard
drives, discs and back up devices cannot
be read or retrieved. A certificate of data
destruction is then issued. The equipment
is then refurbished and offered for sale
to charities, low income groups and
developing countries. Only when an item
has no further useful life will it be recycled
in an environmentally friendly manner.
How do I know that my personal data will
not end up in the wrong hands?
All removed equipment is held in safe
storage. Our automatic procedure is
to erase all data to MoD standard so
that information from hard drives, discs
and back up devices cannot be read or
retrieved.
